We awoke to further tragic news regarding a Malaysian Airlines flight yesterday, after MH017 was shot down over the Ukraine. Unlike MH370, there was absolutely nothing Malaysian Airlines could do about this one and you have to really feel for them. Seeing some of the Malaysian Airlines representatives fronting up at the media conferences yesterday was a sickening case of deja vu, and with so many people from so many nationalities impacted it will take a while for it all to sink in.
Much of the fallout since has involved questions regarding why Malaysian Airlines was flying through the area in the first place, and it has been pointed out several times since that the area has a high volume of Europe to Asia flights. A scary thought is there was a Singapore Airlines Flight, along with an Air India flight in the vicinity at the time. It just as easily could have been either of these flights shot down instead, which makes the events of yesterday all the more tragic for those involved.
In any event, commercial airlines are now giving the area a wide berth. Here's yesterday's Singapore Airlines Europe-bound flights staying well away from the conflicted area.
