Its good to see news around Qatar's 2022 World Cup Bid in the news again. The whole fiasco of awarding two world cups at the same time smacked of insanity at the time, and the grin on Sepp's face when he announced Qatar as one of the winners was a clear indication the kickback cheque must have cleared.
Who in their right mind would want to play football in the desert in the middle of summer? And that's ignoring the aspects of treatment of women, whether the football folk from around the world will be allowed to enjoy a drink or two in public, and the standards of dress that will be expected.
There are now growing calls for Qatar to be stripped of the World Cup, or in the very least to re-run the bidding process to ensure transparency. Whether or not anything eventuates remains to be seen.
In the event Qatar retains the right to hold the 2022 World Cup, I for one hope it turns out to be an absolute shambles. It deserves nothing more, and I'd love to see football nations send their B or even C teams, fans staying away in droves, and the billions of dollars worth of new infrastructure basically turning into instant white elephants. Nothing would shine a better light on the practices of FIFA as the games governing body.
