Picking up the theme of visiting spots of Singapore while I have the time, yesterday was a good opportunity to take a look at the southern end of the Green Corridor, a long windy trail & park that has been left behind after the Singapore to Malaysia railway was ripped up, with trains from Malaysia now terminating at Woodlands on the Singapore side, just across the causeway from Johor Bahru.
Coincidentally the new Thompson Line, which broke ground today (I think that's the official term), has announced plans to link Johor Bahru via the MTR network - detail here.
Our apartment is not far from the now abandoned Bukit Timah station and bridge which remains over Bukit Timah and Dunearn Roads. I joined the Green Corridor at this secton and headed south, originally aiming for Holland Village. It didn't take as long as I thought it would, so soldiered on another hour. With the Sun quickly setting but the end in sight I reached the old railyards near the port, then made it to the old Tanjong Pagar station along suburban streets.
The bridge over Bukit Timah Road, with tracks still intact:
Remnants of Bukit Timah Station, next stop Singapura:
Heading south, long stretches of green in the urban jungle:
Views occasionally interrupted by apartment blocks:
Old meets new near Buona Vista Station:
End of the line: what's left of the Tanjong Pagar goods yards, now fenced off, an enormous empty space in the heart of the city. No prizes for guessing what it might look like in ten years:
A slight deviation towards Kampong Bahru HDB, which have been boarded up and now sit empty, awaiting the bulldozer:
[Update]:
These are actually old KTM (Keretapi Tanah Melayu - Malaysian Railway) apartments, much more detail here and here
Last but not least, Tanjong Pagar Station. Now fenced off and awaiting a new tenant, a sad outcome for a building that's played such a big part in Singapore's history:
As a passing thought, the Remember Singapore page has a lot of detail on the Green Corridor (and to me previously unknown Jurong Railway) when it was a functioning railway.
